About Ivy

Drawn to the complicated

Ivy Altman writes dark stories about complicated people, difficult choices and the consequences that follow.

She is drawn to contradiction—to the distance between what people believe about themselves and what their choices reveal. To desire that complicates rather than simplifies. To relationships that change the people inside them, and to the uncomfortable questions that emerge when easy answers disappear.

Her stories can move through different shades of darkness, but darkness alone is never the point.

What matters is what it reveals.

The choices people make when the stakes become personal. The truths they conceal from others, and sometimes from themselves. The vulnerabilities exposed when certainty gives way.

Darkness can take many forms. What interests Ivy is the person standing inside it.

The stories Ivy writes

Ivy writes for readers who are drawn to complicated characters, difficult attraction and stories that refuse to make every answer comfortable.

Her relationships are allowed to develop in the difficult spaces between desire and consequence, vulnerability and self-protection, what people say they want and what their choices eventually reveal.

Some stories may venture further into darkness than others. Some may be more intimate, more dangerous, more unsettling or more tender. What remains is Ivy's fascination with imperfect people finding something worth risking themselves for.

Because the most interesting characters are rarely the easiest ones to understand.

And the most interesting choices are rarely the safest ones to make.

A note from Ivy

I have never been particularly interested in perfect people.

Give me the difficult ones.

The ones who make questionable decisions for reasons that almost make sense. Who carry contradictions they don't always recognise in themselves. Who can be intelligent, infuriating, vulnerable, selfish, brave and occasionally spectacularly wrong.

I don't need every story to explore darkness in the same way. I do need the people inside it to matter.

I want desire to have consequences. Choices to carry weight. Trust to mean something when it is given. And whatever develops between two people to feel earned rather than inevitable.

I suppose that's what keeps drawing me back to the complicated ones. They don't always make the choices I would make. Sometimes I wish they would. But somewhere between who they believe themselves to be and who they become when something truly matters, I find the story I want to tell.

If you like your stories a little complicated, your characters imperfect and your darkness accompanied by something worth discovering beneath it...
